What is Burns Bros., Inc?

In 1947, Jack and Bob Burns founded Burns Bros., Inc. (BBI). The company began as a single Standard Oil truck stop located in the Central Eastside Industrial area of Portland, Oregon. Many of its original trucking customers were produce haulers from California. Over the next 51 years, Burns Bros. Travel Stops expanded as far east as the Mississippi River and as far south and east as Gallup, New Mexico. In 1998, BBI sold its travel stop division to TravelCenters of America (TA). TA combined the Burns Bros. Travel Stops with its own east coast locations, creating a nationwide system of travel stops.

BBI also owned several consumer products and wholesale companies, which it has since sold. The names of those companies were: Security Chain Co. (manufacturer and marketer of snow tire chains, hardware chain, and cargo control devices….and the originator of “cable chains”); Lumilite Products Co. (designer and marketer of battery-operated flashlights and lanterns to the mass retail markets); Automotive Jobbers Warehouse (wholesale automotive parts distribution in Oregon and SW Washington); Burns Bros. International (nationwide wholesaler of car and truck batteries and motor mounts); and Burns Bros. Wholesale Tire Co. (tire wholesaler to independent tire stores in Oregon and SW Washington). At its peak size in 1998, BBI had 2,000 employees.

In 1999, after the sale of its travel stops, BBI began to buy, develop, and invest in commercial real estate. Today, we have interests in Class “A” office, retail, industrial, multi-family, and historic properties. We invest as long-term holders of commercial real estate which will enhance and serve the communities in which we are located.
